Mission & Philosophy

 

In the spirit of St. Damien of Moloka’i, Christian Service at Damien High School offers students the opportunity to live our Mission beyond the walls of the classroom. Christian Service encourages students to take socially responsible action by offering substantive, compassionate, and faith-filled service. Following St. Damien’s model of servant leadership, students are especially encouraged to volunteer in organizations whose projects are supportive of those in need.

 

The faculty and staff of Damien High School provide students with a broad range of opportunities to acquire knowledge and to develop the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills necessary for future academic success. Students learn to analyze, solve, and understand problems, and express their ideas in a clear and meaningful fashion. The emphasis in the curriculum is college preparatory; all students will have met or exceeded the subject requirements for admission to the CSU and UC systems. Upon graduation, students will possess a diverse academic knowledge in required and elective courses.

 

The co-curricular development of scholarship of a Damien student complements his intellectual development. The program offered at Damien includes interscholastic sports, visual and performing arts exhibitions and performances, debate and robotics competitions, sports medicine field work, clubs, and ASB activities. Within these activities, students have opportunities to develop leadership, self-discipline, and social-emotional growth.

 

Damien’s primary mission is to teach as Jesus did. Focused on developing men of service, scholarship, and faith, all faculty and staff seek to integrate in their teaching the four dimensions of Catholic education: message, community, worship, and service. 

Through academic instruction, service, retreats, liturgies and Eucharistic adoration, students are formed in the Catholic faith tradition and inspired by the charism of Saint Damien of Molokai to recognize one's self-worth and the dignity of others.

 

Accordingly, the school is a caring faith community that nurtures a brotherhood marked by confidence, self-discipline, and living virtuously in their families, local communities, and the life of the world.
